NotesDaylilies are sturdy perennials that provide a brilliant display of blossoms for much of the growing season. Large, lily-shaped flowers are produced on long stems projecting above the clumps of narrow, pale green foliage. Though often used as an edging or mixed into borders, Daylily is also well-suited to groundcover use where its arching , spreading habit will quickly fill in an area. Roots of Daylily grab onto the soil, making it an ideal candidate for erosion control on slopes and banks. Plant 12 – 18 inches on centers. Every 3-5 years clumps can be divided for more plants. Fertilize 2-3 times with slow release bloomer.

Empire Zoysia

If you’re looking for a great alternative to St. Augustine grass, Empire Zoysia is your answer.

Discovered in Brazil among the dense tropical foliage, Empire Zoysia is perfect for hot and humid areas. Noted for its dense, fine texture, durability and lush color, this grass makes a thick blanket of deep green that will make all your neighbors jealous. Empire Zoysia has many advantages over St. Augustine including:

  • Texture – You may not expect turf grass this strong to be soft, but Empire Zoysia beckons you to take barefoot walks across it’s plush carpet of densely packed blades. No longer will you have to worry about the “itchyness” and irritation to your skin from lying in St. Augustine sod.
  • Durability – Strong enough for professional use, this grass is a favorite among resorts, golf courses, theme parks, and office complexes. Unlike St. Augustine that has to be repaired by sod pieces and plugs, Zoysia is a self seeding grass that will repair itself.
  • Tolerant – Empire Zoysia tolerates high humidity and heat as well as drought making it suitable for any part of Florida. The grass can perform well in full sun or in shade making it extremely versatile.
  • Pests & Disease – Slow growth and a natural resistance to chinch bug (the #1 enemy of St. Augustine grass) make this grass an almost automatic choice. Disease are not usually a problem with Zoysia which mean fewer applications of insecticides and fungicides.
  • Weeds – Because of its dense growth habit, weeds are rarely a problem in healthy strands, but the grass tolerates all common herbicides if needed.
  • Mowing – Zoysia grass is meant to be kept a lot shorter than St. Augustine sod at around 1.5″ – 2″ in height. A reel type mower is recommended to cut Zoysia but a standard mower will work just fine. Just be sure that the blade on your mower is kept sharp for every cut.
