Pink Muhly Grass
Muhly Grass is one of the BEST grasses to use in the landscape! It is very symmetrical with a fine texture that gently sways in the breeze. This tough Native will tolerate drought and flooding making it suited for wetland sites as well as beach front sand dunes. Beautiful rose colored plumes rise above the plant in fall to make a spectacular display. Muhly is beautiful when planted under sabal palms, as a standalone accent, or in dramatic massed beds. When planting more than one, space them at least 5′ apart so at maturity each individual plant barely touches the other. Muhly will not completely die back in winter like most grasses. Average height and width is 3′-4′ and muhly has good salt tolerance and is deer resistant. Plant in full sun!
Camellia Sasquana
While it’s true that the “japonicas” have larger flowers, Camellia sasanqua has just as many endearing attributes. Like the japonicas, sasanquas have been selected and hybridized into dozens of forms that vary immensely in flower color and size and shape. Sasanquas can cope with many different soil types. They prefer rich organic acid soils (the same as azaleas). Provide plants with an organic mulch such as leaf litter or pine bark mulch. These plants have beautiful natural shapes but if pruning is needed it is best done “lightly” and in very early spring before buds form. Broken shade is preferred but sasanquas are tolerant of sun (especially if well watered). Sasanquas need adequate water to look their best but they are surprisingly tolerant of drought once established. Average growth is 3′-5′ and they are cold hardy, however, they are not salt tolerant and deer have been known to eat them.
Camellia Japonica
Beautiful flowers of many colors, make a great contrast with the glossy, dark green foliage. Camellias are evergreen and very cold hardy. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Provide well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Feed with an acid fertilizer after blooming. Keep roots cool with a thick layer of mulch. Pruning time: winter after flowering. Morning sun only, dappled or shifting light. Use as border, container, mass planting, privacy screen, specimen, woodland garden or as lone specimen. Average height is 6′-8′ with an average spread of 3′-4′. Unfortunately camellias are neither salt tolerant nor deer resistant.
Drift Roses
Drift Roses come from the developers of the Knock Out rose. It is a compact, prolific blooming, groundcover rose perfect for small gardens, containers, hanging baskets, or mass planted for dramatic color. Enrich the soil in a well drained area in full sun. Fertilize with slow release fertilizer spring, summer and fall- Nurserymen Sure Gro 6-8-10. Drift roses are very disease and pest resistant and require very little care once established. A GREAT new rose with endless possibilities in the garden. Average growth is 3′-4′ high and wide. Drift Roses are moderately salt tolerant however are not deer resistant. They come in a range of colors such as the red shown, pink, peach and coral.
Knock Out Roses
It’s the easy care rose that’s been featured in every gardening book or magazine! The Knock Out Rose is an outstanding plant that really is an easy care rose. It blooms YEAR ROUND, and looks best in winter when most plants are not blooming. Amend the soil when planting and fertilize 4 times per year with slow release 6-8-10 Bloomer fertilizer and you’ll be amazed at the performance of this plant. Roses require a minimum of 6 hrs full sun in a well drained area. Do not over water – drought tolerant once established. Average height and width 3′-4′. They are moderately salt tolerant however are not deer resistant.
Cassia
Deep golden yellow flowers appear in October, and on mature plants blooms last through Christmas! The Cassia is a wonderful addition to the garden for stunning color in a season where most flowering plants are waiting for Spring! Fast growing up to 12′ tall and wide. Plant in well drained soil. Drought tolerant once established. A great plant to attract bees and butterflies to the garden.
