Listed below are some tips on how to calculate the quantity of mulch you will need for your yard.

*NOTE – the following calculations are based on putting down 2″ of mulch.

Calculate the square footage of landscape beds

- Divide the beds into squares, rectangles, triangles  & circles to make it easier to calculate.

HouseGrid

- To find the area of a SQUARE – multiply the length x’s the width

- To find the area of a RECTANGLE – multiply the length x’s the widh

- To find the area of a CIRCLE – multiply 3.14 x radius x radius (or r2)

- To find the area of a TRIANGLE – multiply 1/2 x the base x the height

- Add the totals together to get your total square footage = “M”

Convert to square footage to cubic yards

- Take your total square footage (M) and divde by 120 to get “C”

- Example 1,200 sq ft / 120 = 10 cubic yards

VerdeGo sells 2 cu ft. bags of mulch

- There are 27 cubic feet in 1 cubic yard

- It takes 13.5 bags to make 1 cubic yard

- Multiply “C” x 13.5 to find out how many bags of mulch you will need.

- Example – 10 x 13.5 = 135 bags of mulch to cover 10 cubic yards at 2″ deep.

For 1″ of mulch spread (top dressing), divide final number by 2

- Example – 135 bags / 2 = 67.5 or 68 bags of mulch to top dress 1,200 sq ft of landscape bed
