Plants of the Month: Hollies

Burfordi Holly:

Burfordi Holly plants have lustrous, dark green shiny foliage against the red berries in fall and winter. They have all the makings for a beautiful
plant! During spring the plant becomes covered in tiny, white clustered flowers. After the flowers fall tiny, green berries continue to grow until turn red just in time for the holiday season and to supply birds with a food source. Use against house walls as foundation planting, massed in large beds, or where a medium sized hedge is needed.

Yaupon Holly:

Weeping Yaupon Holly makes a very distinct, irregular weeping form with its upright crooked trunks and slender, curved, pendulous branches covered with small, oval, grey-green foliage. Some gardeners prefer to leave the branches full to the ground while others like to trim the lower limbs for an umbrella shaped tree. During the fall and winter season the tree is covered in bright, red berries that birds love to eat. Once established Weeping Yaupon is extremely drought tolerant and needs very little care. Upright Yaupon holly grows the same as the weeping except- as the name implies- it grows in an upright fashion as opposed to weeping.

East Palatka Holly:

Discovered growing in the wild near the community of East Palatka, Florida, around 1926, this tree has a more refined appearance in the landscape with its softer green foliage and non-spiny leaves makes it one of the best of the holly varieties. An abundance of bright, red, berries appear in winter – East Palatka is a female clone – just in time for the holiday season, and, are devoured by birds. This Florida Native is one of our most popular medium-size ornamental tree. A perfect choice for privacy screening along property perimeter or as a standalone specimen. Birds love this tree for the food source as well as nesting.
