Notes: This palm makes a statement wherever it is planted. The Canary Island Date Palm aka. “Pineapple Palm” is a beautiful palm that can serve as a nice focal point in a yard. The Canary’s will get huge so make sure they are planted away from a house/driveway and have plenty of room to grow. The fronds are a deep green shading to a yellow stem where the leaflets are replaced by vicious spines. Be careful when pruning or walking near as these spines can cause serious injury and irritation. The term “Pineapple Palm” comes from a style of pruning that shapes the trunk of the palm to look like a pineapple. Although a beautiful specimen, these palms come with quite a bit of maintenance that few are aware of. These palms hate to be pruned. At the minimum the crown of fronds should be left at 180 degrees. If over pruned the palm will send out a pheromone attracting a weevil insect that will destroy the palms. These palms should be sprayed twice a year to prevent the weevils from infesting. This palms is also very susceptible to Texas Phoenix Palm Decline and Fusarium Wilt. Both disease have no cure and can be lethal to the palm.
